Kadarius Toney Leaves Field After Minor Injury

The race continues for who will be WR1 this 2023-2024 season for the Kansas City Chiefs with Kadarius Toney first in mind. Toney has yet to complete a full NFL season due to injuries including his rookie season where he broke Odell Beckham Jr. ‘s record for most yards on receptions by a Giants rookie in a game in 2021 against the Dallas Cowboys.

However, Toney reportedly left training camp practice over the weekend as he “tweaked his knee” on a punt return during a pre-practice punt return. Could this season have the same trajectory as previous seasons for Toney as Chiefs looked to make him WR1 this season?

In the last couple years, the wide receivers bunch for the Chiefs have constantly been rotating. The 2021 trade of WR Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins shocked NFL fans as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Hill had created a highly respected trio in the NFL. Filling the void, Chiefs signed receiver Juju Smith-Schuster to a 1 year deal in 2022 but Smith-Schuster decided not to re-sign with the Chiefs; instead, signed with Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots.

Despite injuries, Kadarius Toney had a stellar season in the games he was able to play in including the two big plays he influenced in the Super Bowl LVII win. He not only gave the Chiefs their first lead of the Super Bowl with a TD early in the 4th quarter but following he made history with his 65-yard punt return – which is the longest punt return ever in Super Bowl history.

Toney was not on the field for practice this Monday morning according to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, raising questions of the trajectory of this season as Chiefs looked to Toney to fill the WR1 role.

Chiefs have a few receivers that are hungry for more as well. Second round 2022 draft pick Skyy Moore, who made his mark last season as he scored a TD in the Chiefs win over the Philadelphia Eagles, is on the radar for consideration of WR1 as well. Other receivers including Richie James, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and rookie Rashee Rice all look to be Patrick Mahomes #1 receiver this 2023-2024 season. I’m excited to see what Kansas City does this season because we work best as the perceived ‘underdogs’.
